Game Dev Practice Pack #1
You can watch tutorials forever and still freeze when it’s time to build something on your own?
The Game Dev Practice Pack is designed to fix that!
Instead of following step-by-step instructions, you get a starting project, a clear mechanic to build, clear set of objectives, progressive hints, and a complete solution to compare against after you’ve made your own attempt.
This is how you gain the experience you need to build ANY game you can imagine!
Game Dev Practice Pack #1
Build 10 Real Unity Systems Without Following Tutorials
What Is The Game Dev Practice Pack?
The Game Dev Practice Pack is a collection of 10 Unity game mechanic challenges designed to help you practice building real systems.
Each challenge gives you a prepared starting scene and a specific mechanic to implement.
Your job is to build the system yourself first.
Then, after your attempt, you can watch the solution breakdown and compare your approach against a clean implementation.
This is NOT passive tutorial watching.
This is deliberate practice for game developers! This is how you reach the next level!
How It Works
- Step 1: Open the starting project. Each challenge begins with a prepared Unity scene, assets, and helper code so you can focus on the actual system.
- Step 2: Read the objectives. You’ll know exactly what mechanic you’re trying to build.
- Step 3: Try to solve it yourself. This is the most important part. Even an incomplete attempt teaches you more than passively watching another tutorial.
- Step 4: Use hints when you get stuck. Hints are there to guide you without immediately giving away the full solution.
- Step 5: Watch the solution breakdown to see how a professional game dev (me) solved the same challenge.
CHALLENGE LIST
Build 10 Real Unity Systems Without Following Tutorials
#0 - Save System City Builder
Build a Save System to store all data in this mini City Builder game.
#1 - CCTV Camera System
Build a CCTV Camera System where the Player can see what various cameras in the world see.
#2 - Traffic Controller
Implement road rules so cars can navigate the city safely.
#3 - Keypad Access System
Build a reusable access control system where you can use Keypads and access codes to unlock doors and interact with objects in a secure facility.
#4 - Platform Jump-Drop Through 2D
Build a classic 2D platformer character controller that can jump and drop through platforms.
#5 - Refactor Pick-up Drop System
The warehouse delivery system already works... but the code is a mess!
The player can pick up boxes, carry them to delivery zones, and score points. But everything is tightly coupled, hardcoded, duplicated, and difficult to expand.
Your challenge is to refactor the system while keeping the same gameplay behavior.
#6 - Quest System
Implement a fantasy quest system where the player can accept quests from NPCs, complete objectives like talking, collecting wood, killing rats, and track active quest progress in the UI.
#7 - Worker Task System
Build an automated worker task system like in a Tycoon game.
In this warehouse there are various tasks that need doing, the floor needs to be cleaned and boxes need to be carried.
The important part is not just making one worker do one thing. The real goal is to build a system that can support different task types and multiple workers without everything breaking.
#8 - Resources, Storage and Offline
Build a mini incremental/idle game where the player builds machines that generate resources over time.
The player can pick up resources and store them in the bank.
Then the mini-game should have saving and loading alongside an offline system.
#9 - Fire Spread Simulation
Build a grid-based fire spread system where fire spreads from cell to cell, burns flammable objects, and is blocked by walls.
Who This Is For
This is for Unity developers who already know the basics but want more practice building real systems.
It is especially useful if you:
- understand tutorials while watching them, but struggle to build alone
- want to improve your problem-solving skills
- want more practice with clean Unity/C# architecture
- want to build mechanics that appear in real games
- prefer a one-time purchase instead of a subscription
Who This Is NOT For
This is not the best starting point if you have never used Unity or written C# before.
You should already know the basics of Unity, GameObjects, Components, Prefabs, Scenes, and C# scripts.
This is also not a step-by-step beginner course.
The point is to practice solving problems yourself.
Who am I?
Why should you listen to what I have to teach?
My name is Hugo, I've been programming for over 25 years, I've written millions of lines of code across several languages, my favorite is C#.
I started making Flash games in 2008 and moved on to Unity and Steam in 2012. In the past decade I've been making successful solo-developed Indie Games on Steam (over $1 Million revenue) and my games are Systems-heavy since my main skillset is as a programmer.
Then in 2018 I decided to start a YouTube channel so I could share my knowledge with anyone who wants to learn how to make games.
I'm a big fan of writing good high quality clean code that, not only works, but is easily understandable and expandable, which is what allows me (and you) to make more and more interesting games.
I love making games myself and teaching people how to make games. Whenever I play a game I always think to myself "oh that's a fun mechanic! I want to build that myself!" which is part of the reason this program exists, just to satisfy my own desire to build fun mechanics and I'm bringing you along for the journey with me!

I have an AWESOME Skill!
(that I want you to have too)
I can build any game idea I can think of. Anything I can imagine, I know I can build.
I've already made Strategy games, Management games, Action, Adventure, RPG, Driving, almost every genre. Within all those games I've built 100+ game mechanics from scratch, without relying on tutorials. And most importantly, I know that any game idea or any mechanic I can imagine, I know I can build it!
I love having this skill and I want to pass this skill on to YOU!
The only way to gain this skill is through a ton of experience, that's exactly what I designed this program to do. Here you have challenges that require you to actively build in order to complete. After you build 10 game mechanics and solve that many problems you will then have enough experience to be able to build anything you can imagine, just like I can!
This is the closest thing there is to a SECRET in Game Development!
